NEREA SCHOLARSHIP FUND – Updates from past recipients:
February 1, 2010 Attn: NEREA Scholarship Fund Dear NEREA members, Thank you for the follow-up letter and your continued interest in my career. The scholarship you previously awarded me was much needed and appreciated. Since our last communication, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) with a degree in Biochemistry & Cell Biology in 2007. During the time as an undergraduate I participated in may extracurricular activities, I worked at the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, I was a chemistry and biology teaching assistant, and I did research at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center. I also spent a summer at UC Irvine working with Auditory Neuropathy patients which led to a 2009 publication in the Journal of Chemical Neurophysiology. After graduation I worked full time as a research associate in the biophysics laboratory at FFA Sciences. During my free time I studied for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and went on medical schools interviews. I am currently attending the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine with a degree expected in 2013. I have been married to a former US Navy first class petty officer for the last year.
Once again thank you for your interest in me, and I hope this letter is well received by the NEREA members.
Sincerely, Brenda J. Hyde (Maiden name Lolli)
Dear NEREA: I was a recipient of one of your scholarships my senior year of high school. This has now been 10 years ago and I would like to express my gratitude for your investment and would like to share with you how your scholarship has contributed to my career successes. Your scholarship, as well as other community scholarships, university academic scholarships, and a work study program helped me to pay for my education and I was able to graduate debt free. Being debt free has probably been the biggest contributing factor to my success in my career field, teaching. I attended Grand Canyon University from 2000-2004. I graduated summa cum laude and was one of ten May Rayben Scholars in my graduating class. I was able to complete my study in Physical Education and student teaching in four years. I was hired by Liberty School District in Buckeye, Arizona where I began teaching K-8 PE. In my second year of teaching I was nominated by my school staff as Teacher of the Year. I represented my school at the Westside IMPACT teacher of the year banquet in Glendale, Arizona. I taught two years in Arizona, then, after getting married, I moved to Brighton, Colorado where I have taught for the last four years. Here in Colorado I have mentored a student teacher, and have been the team leader for the Specials Teachers (music, art, and computers). I also co-chair our school CAT team (collaborative, accountability, team). I certainly appreciate your contribution to my education and hope that you can share in my success as a teacher. I think your scholarship program is an incredibly valuable tool that will help others who desire to pursue a higher education.
Sincerely, Renee Sanders

To Whom It May Concern:
I was awarded a scholarship from this organization in 2000. Thanks to the generosity of NEREA the past nine years have been very busy, but very rewarding. After graduating from Long Beach High School, in Long Beach, MS, I attended the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL. Wishing to pursue a career in the medical field, I began the Biomedical Science program. After four long years, I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science, with a minor in Chemistry. From there I wished to attend graduate school to become a Physician Assistant. I decided to remain at USA in Mobile. The next twenty-seven months were the most intense period of my life. Finally, in July of 2006, I graduated with a Masters of Health Science degree, with an emphasis in Physician Assistant Studies. In August of 2006, I sat for and passed the National Certification Exam and became a certified physician assistant. Being from South Mississippi, I decided to return close to home. Excited and anxious right out of graduate school, I accepted a job in Hattiesburg, MS working at Southern Heart Center, the cardiology department of Hattiesburg Clinic. In August of 2009, I celebrated my third anniversary at this job. I have been very blessed by my career. I would like to thank your organization for providing me the scholarship I received a few years back, as it has been a huge help in my success. I hope that your organization is able to continue to assist lucky students like myself.
With Much Thanks and Appreciation, Sheena Thomas, PA-C
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Hello,
My grandmother, Mollie Wigler was a Navy Exchange employee for 30 years. It was in her merit that I qualified for a college scholarship in 2000 and attended Boston University. I graduated in 2004 with a major in urban studies, which comprised various courses in liberal arts related to cities. After a 2 year stint as a New York City tour guide, I landed a position as a commercial real estate appraiser in 2006. In my 3+ years, I have appraised over 110 properties in New York City and nationally. I enjoy appraising real estate as it is incorporates my writing skills with my knowledge of real estate as well as helping banks with making more prudent lending decisions. In February 2010 I received my license from New York State and I am currently pursuing the MAI, a nationally recognized professional designation. I thank the NEREA for the scholarship and assisting me in achieving my collegiate goals. Sincerely, Mark N. Wigler
